Making Space for Wellness, Connection, and Purpose
Dear Wellness Essence Community,
October invites us to pause and consider how we are caring for ourselves while caring for others. For nurses, students, educators, and caregivers, responsibilities can leave little room to notice our own needs.
This month, I am focusing on a simple message: our well-being deserves a place in our daily lives. Whether we are preparing for clinical practice, supporting a colleague, or serving our communities, we need opportunities to rest, reflect, and feel supported.
Bringing Nursing Wellness Conversations to Guyana
This October, I am preparing to travel to Guyana for meetings with the Minister of Health and nursing schools, along with community outreach.
Through Wellness Essence Essentials, my goal is to listen, understand local priorities, and explore how practical wellness education can complement the work already taking place.
My nursing wellness program focuses on two important stages: preparing students before their first clinical experiences and supporting them as they transition into professional practice. Topics include managing stress, building confidence, seeking mentorship, and recognizing the importance of psychological safety.
As a nurse educator and clinical professor since 2015, I have seen how much students benefit from having space to ask questions, express uncertainty, and develop confidence with guidance. I look forward to sharing these ideas and learning from nursing leaders and educators in Guyana.
Community Care: Supporting Children and Caregivers
My upcoming visit also includes planned outreach to the Shaheed Boys Orphanage in Georgetown.
This work is close to my heart. Along with supporting the children, I hope to explore practical ways to support the caregivers whose daily dedication helps them feel safe and cared for.
I look forward to sharing reflections and updates after my visit.
Your October Wellness Practice: A Three-Question Check-In
Before moving into your next responsibility, give yourself a moment to ask:
- What am I carrying today? Name one concern or demand that is taking up your energy.
- What do I need? Consider rest, encouragement, clearer boundaries, or help with a task.
- What is one manageable step I can take? Choose something realistic for today.
You do not have to solve everything at once. Start by noticing what needs your attention.
For Nursing Students: Confidence Grows Through Support
If clinical experiences feel overwhelming, remember that learning includes asking questions and receiving guidance.
Before your next clinical day, identify one learning goal. Afterward, reflect on one thing you learned and one question to bring to your instructor or mentor.
You are allowed to be a learner. You do not need to have every answer to make progress.
