Prioritizing my wellbeing as a nurse has been challenging, especially with the demands of long shifts, unpredictable hours, and the emotional toll of patient care. It can be hard to find time for breaks, let alone consistent self-care routines, when patient needs come first. Balancing this with my own needs often leads to fatigue and makes it easy to neglect activities that recharge me, like going on walks or playing guitar. Over time, I’ve learned the importance of setting boundaries and making self-care a non-negotiable part of my routine to stay effective and resilient in my role.

The biggest challenge I have faced prioritizing my own wellbeing as a nurse or healthcare worker, is finding the time to maintain my own wellbeing. You can very easily get carried with the stress of working that you forget to take care of yourself.

Some challenges I have faced while prioritizing my own wellbeing as a nurse is finding the time to be able to fully wind down. I’m constantly thinking about what I could have done better during my shift. When I finally felt more comfortable I was able to stop feeling so guilty about what could have happened, and started to shift my thinking to “I did my best, but I’ll continue learning to further improve my skills”. Another challenge I have faced is having patients who aren’t the most kind, this takes a toll on one’s mental health and their confidence. Remembering that it isn’t personal has helped a lot and setting a boundary as well. Another solution I have found worked for me is to remind the patient that as nurses we want the absolute best for our patients and we do the best we can to make them feel better. All these challenges have made taking my own wellbeing into full consideration a priority.

Challenges that have surfaced is not having enough time. Being a nurse is very taxing on the body physically and mentally. We always have to be on our feet and working. It is very time-consuming and sometimes the thing that gets neglected the most is our wellbeing. I believe mental and physical health is very important in having a long healthy life, but with the healthcare world it is definetly difficult to have time to take care of yourself.

Some challenges I have faced were being able to manage my time between school and work. I found myself putting too much on my plate, and I was getting burnt out. I had to start prioritizing myself, so I started running and going to the gym to reduce my stress, and putting less hours in at work so I can take the time to study and learn the material better.

As a nurse it has been challenging to prioritize my own wellbeing because of high stress environments, long shifts and emotional toll of patient care. When you are taking care of others, it is hard to take out time for yourself. Sometimes we feel guilty stepping away from the patient or situation to take time for ourselves.

Challenges in the healthcare field include dealing with depressing or high-pressure situations. It is stressful dealing with many high risk patients at a time, and it can cause me to feel overwhelmed. This is why I make it a point to practice. self care, daily.
